Epson has released a new Direct to Shape Printing System: an inkjet printing solution that combines PrecisionCore printheads and robots to print directly on 3D objects. The system will be formally launched at the upcoming ‘smart automation and robotics trade fair’, Automatica, at the Messe München, Germany from June 24th to 27th.
Epson's new Direct to Shape Printing System: is an inkjet printing solution that combines PrecisionCore printheads & robotics to print directly on 3D objects
The compact, high-precision S800 PrecisionCore printheads - the smallest printhead in the PrecisionCore series – are independently raised and lowered by a 6-axis Epson industrial robot. The small size of the printheads and MicroPiezo inkjet technology allows high resolution printing (600 x 600dpi) on complex shapes such as grooves and curves and the flexibility and variations capable through the robot’s lifting mechanisms and precision trajectory control accommodate up to 5-colour printing on objects from different angles with outstanding quality and accuracy: notionally ‘Direct to Shape’ printing.
The Direct to Shape Printing System also digitalises traditional analogue printing, streamlining manufacturing processes by automating manual tasks and using space efficiently. Epson's inkjet technology deposits ink only where and in the volume needed. This reduces the amount of material used and wasted, making inkjet printing more environmentally sustainable. Inkjet systems also eliminate the need for plates or special materials for each operation, enabling cost-effective personalisation and customisation. The new Epson Direct to Shape printing system
Direct to Shape Printing System is expected to be used in fields where there is a demand for printing on 3D shapes, such as helmets for athletics and industrial use, automotive parts (interior and exterior), home appliances, sporting equipment, apparel, accessories and more.
In addition to graphics applications, Epson envisions Direct to Shape Printing System being used for some functional printing applications, such as the printing of sensors with conductive ink and the coating of 3D objects.
From July 2025, the Direct to Shape Printing System exhibited at Automatica will be permanently installed at Epson Deutschland GmbH, providing a test and evaluation environment for customer substrates and accelerating real-world implementation.
