OSS Digital, sole supplier for David Jones has installed a HP Latex Designjet L65500.

Resolution, colour and speed are the key motivators that led Sydney’s OSS Digital to the HP Designjet L65500 with HP Latex Inks Technology.

“Resolution is a big thing for us,” says OSS Digital director Greg Edkins whose company was named sole supplier for David Jones national retail signage account this year.

“If a client has spent thousands on photography they expect the best reproduction possible, and this is particularly true for the high-end retail market. The print speeds on this Designjet are fast, but the resolution is outstanding and the colour gamut excellent.”

Another production benefit, says Edkins, is the printer’s capacity to run unattended. “One of the keys to success is a machine that doesn’t require constant attention by the operator. We load this printer at night, send down a bunch of prints and go home with confidence the jobs will be completed. Most days we output around 120 metres overnight. Being able to do this means we save time and money and can push through more work”.

He also acknowledges the unique environmental properties of the HP Latex Inks Technology serve as a marketing tool. “The first month we produced David Jones’ work on this printer we sent them an email telling them we had printed their job on the most environmentally friendly machinery on the market. That messaging is important for clients who are environmentally conscious”.

Edkins first viewed the HP Designjet L65500 printer at PacPrint last year. “I left the show thinking this latex inks printer was the future. When you factor its production capabilities with the eco-friendly nature of the latex inks it is a winning combination”.

Returning to Sydney Edkins worked with HP channel partner Celmac to close the deal. “They have great technical and sales people who have a good understanding of colour. And when we need help they don’t hesitate”.

Since its installation in November last year the HP Designjet L65500 has enabled Edkins to introduce new products including 2.2m wide, seamless, light box images. “With this machine and the film substrate we are using we can recreate the Duratrans style prints of old at a fraction of the cost. When you have high-end clients it makes all the difference to be able to produce quality backlit images without joins or skins. This gives us a real point of differentiation in the market”.

At its premises in Leichardt, OSS Digital operates a number of HP Designjet devices including two HP Designjet Z6100 printers. “I’ve just put in the second Z6100,” says Edkins. “The skin tone reproduction is brilliant on this printer”.

Five years ago the company shifted focus from general signage to the retail market. Since then OSS Digital has grown from five people to 35.

Of the company’s success Edkins says, “We know our product really well and understand our clients’ reality. We make it easy for them to deal with us because we are reliable, deliver a consistently high level of service and are accountable. That’s critical”.

In conclusion he says, “We’ve been waiting for a printer like the HP Designjet with latex inks. That patience has paid off”.
