When it came down to picking the winners in the PacPrint13 ‘Think Print’ poster design competition from 160 entries, the final decision to award the prize to Swinburne student Daniel Goodrich went to four expert judges.

A senior marketing executive, a print industry professional with more than 40 years’ experience, a communications manager and, of course, a senior designer, were locked in a room together with the 20 final contenders…and left to fight it out.
PacPrint13 OVERALL WINNER“The criteria were fairly simple,” explains David Motee, Group Account Director from HIVE Creative, who co-ordinated the competition on behalf of PacPrint13. “As well as the response to the brief or the idea based on the theme – which could be anything from typography, to photographic images or other elements – judges were asked to consider the design execution and the relevance of the poster to PacPrint.  
“Each, however, brought their unique approach to the process – for some, the design and visual impact was critical, for others, it was more about the communicative elements, or how well the poster would reproduce. Needless to say, it created plenty of lively discussion and the panel took more than two hours to create a shortlist of 20 designs, and then whittle that down to the final ten.”
The overall Poster Design Champion, Goodrich wins a MacBook Pro13 for his design, which ingeniously blended head space with print. Judges said it was an excellent idea which showed an accurate interpretation of the theme. The other nine finalists were (in descending order) Pamala Soto, Melanie Wilkie, Suzanne Day, Ginni Poppelwell, Daniel Chiodo, Natasha Legi, Stephen McInerney, David English and Scott McNelly. The winning designs, together with the other 150 entries, can be viewed on the PacPrint Facebook page.
Each of the Top Ten will have their posters printed at PacPrint13, between 10am and 12 noon on Thursday 23 May on the Currie Group and Kodak stands. The winners will be able to take 100 copies home with them, while others will be displayed around the exhibition, promoting the designers to thousands of print, marketing, design and graphic communications specialists who are attending the event.
 “We were delighted with the number and overall quality of the entries,” says Ian Martin, PacPrint Chairman, adding that the number of students who entered the competition was also pleasing, demonstrating that young designers still felt a strong connection to, and understanding of, print as a medium.”
