In a shock announcement via the PVCA’s (formerly PIAA) official journal Print21, the 2023 National Print Awards have been cancelled, along with the formerly state-based PICAs. Four out of five leading sponsors of the 2022 awards were involved in wide format, the other being Media Super.

There will be no NPAs or PICAs for 2023, according to a report on Print21 – the PVCA’s official journal. It would have been the 40th anniversary of the awards. An assurance has been made that the NPAs will return in 2024, following a review. Entries already received for ’23 will be eligible for ’24.

Last year’s NPAs were held during the successful PacPrint expo in Melbourne and were billed as:

“An opportunity to recognise the skill and craftsmanship of the Australian Print and Visual Communications industry. These auspicious, highly regarded and coveted awards are bestowed only on those who display the highest level of skill in their field, having achieved the top echelon of performance within their State before vying for honours on the national stage. Come and join us at this glittering celebration of our great industry.”

NSW Printer Carbon8, running a variety of wide format print and Zund cutting technology, shone at the 2022 awards, scooping five gold and two silver gongs.

Media Super was the Platinum sponsor, with Currie Group, Fujifilm, Orafol, Ball & Doggett and Roland DG as other leading sponsors, all of whom are active in wide format digital hardware and/or consumables supply.

The NPAs were established in 1982 by adman Sid Thompson and became synonymous with excellence in print media – producing lavish catalogues of winners each year. Cerificates are proudly displayed on the reception walls of many print shops.

Industry awards that will take place during 2023 include November’s dazzling Proprint Awards https://proprintawards.com.au/ and, reportedly the Real Media Collective awards. The Real Media Collective and the PVCA merged in late 2022.
