While mostly concerened with the high-volume label production sector, valued at close to AUD$2 billion in Australia-New Zealand, many narrow-web label producers also have wide format printers for oversize labels and micro-runs for proofing and test marketing, using print & cut devices. Mutoh also has adapted its wide format technology to created a colour-critical flexible packaging proofing device that can also be used for folding carton prototyping.

Labels Plus editor Andy McCourt says: "With the spread of home and micro-industrial manufacturing such as organic cosmetics, personal care, honey, conserves, pickles and chutney, gourmet pies and sausages, biscuits and even craft beers and spirits; the demand for very short run quality self-adhesive labels is escalating. These can be produced easily on Roland, Mimaki, Mutoh, Epson and HP print & cut devices, with die-cutting either in one pass or separately with a plotting cutter. It's a great way of connecting with local area small manufacturing and often opens door to other signage work. In the event of longer runs being demanded, these can be farmed out to trade label printers such as Label Power, Guru and others."

Digital inkjet and toner is increasingly used for labels, with options from the benchtop to sophisticated floor-standing presses that include eleborate embellishment stations such as foiling, embossing, spot varnishing and even screen printing.
