Global digital sign company Coates Group, which began as a small sign business in Sydney in the late 1950s, will provide external signage for Ampol Australia’s nationwide rebrand that's being rolled out across 1,900 Australian locations.

“Coates Group has partnered with Ampol Australia to reintroduce the brand – an icon of the Australian fuel industry,” said Coates in a statement. “The partnership marks a momentous occasion for Ampol and Coates alike, with the rollout taking place Australia wide and being the largest that the country’s fuel and convenience industry has seen to date.

"Following an extensive vetting process, Coates Group was selected as the signage provider for the debut of the new Ampol logo and incarnation across a network of approximately 1,900 Australian locations." Now a global technology company, Coates Group began as a small, family-owned signage company in Sydney in the late 1950s and, much like Ampol, Coates has a proud Australian heritage.

“The opportunity for two fiercely Australian companies to work together is one that you don’t often get,” said Marcus Coates, president of Australia / New Zealand & International Markets at Coates. “For Coates to work with Ampol, an iconic brand, as it re-emerges into the spotlight is something that we’re incredibly proud of and excited about.”

The project began in August 2020 with a rebranded pilot store in Concord, NSW - the state in which Ampol was originally founded in 1936.  Coates completed an additional 18 store transitions by the close of 2020.

The remaining stores will be rebranded throughout 2021 and 2022, exclusively featuring Coates external signage. The project requires over 30 signage variations – including main identity signs, price boards, shopfront fascias, and other applications for the Ampol marks and logos – which were designed and prototyped in under a month.
