Last week we published the results of our survey question examining the threat or opportunity posed by large LED and LCD billboard sites. While there is a place for them, a just-installed example of why quality prints work best has appeared at Sydney’s Chatswood Chase shopping mall – and what a superb piece of grand format out-of-home print it is!

Taken from a moving escalator and a bit blurred but this billboard looks sensational

The suspended two-sided backlit 5 metre-wide sign has been updated to promote the musical Billy Elliot and is wonderfully colour-saturated in deep blues, bright red and white reverse lettering. The title text has been cleverly designed to give a ‘3D’ effect and really pops out.

What this means is that all foot and escalator traffic from many angles, can see the Billy Elliot sign 24/7 for the duration of the campaign. It is very high resolution, does not change to another ad every few minutes, does not flash move or otherwise distract. The eye is treated to a feast of bold colour with a strong promotional message that just sits there, impacts and informs every passer-by, every time they pass.

It’s such a great out-of-home campaign – we don’t know who produced it but well done whoever you are! (Editor's note: Keith Ferrel of Cactus Imaging has commented below to say that Cactus produced this great static sign. Thanks Keith - its one to be proud of indeed. Our thanks too to industry icon Stan Kilpin for commenting!-Ed)
